What is your family vision?
A few weeks ago we sat down as a family and decided to create a family vision statement. I was inspired by Scott Beebe and got his Creating a Family Vision package. It was great to go through – quick little videos that made us think, and worksheets to fill out as a family. What I love is that this pushed us to really sit down as a family and talk about what we envision for our home.
We talked about what words inspire us and make us think of our family. We rolled out the butcher paper and drew pictures with the words and the things we love, like nature, travel, creativity, the people in our family, etc.
What are your non-negotiables?
We sat down and talked about what things are family is not. Hate, backbiting, disrespect, whining, negativity…these all made it in our “not welcome” list.
We discussed the “family rules” that are up in our kitchen – it’s simply a decorative piece we got from my parents a few years ago, but as it has hung in our kitchen, we’ve adopted it as our mantra. This was the first thing Clara learned to read in its entirety, and she’s working hard to have the whole thing memorized. We found that the “rules” on the list are exactly what we want for our home.
Sometimes, instead of starting from scratch to create something, look for what already resonates with your children. What little sayings do you have around your house – hung on a wall, or even just things you say? When we look at this list, it helps to remind us about what’s important in our home – love and connection.
What is YOUR way?
We talked a lot about our family vision, and we decided that there isn’t only one way to do this. Our kids our young, and they need something easy to remember that covers all that is important to us.
So we narrowed it down to six words:

What are your words, or your statement for your family?
